Family
classes
starting
in
February |
 |
|
Your
local
NAMI
chapters
invite
you to
attend a
series
of 12
weekly
classes
structured
to help
you
understand
and
support
individuals
with
mental
disorders
while
maintaining
your own
well
being.
These
NAMI
classes
are for
family
members,
partners
and
friends
of
individuals
with
serious
mental
illness.
"This
course
is a
wonderful
experience,"
said one
student.
"It
balances
basic
education
and
skills-training
with
emotional
support,
self
care and
empowerment."
There is
no cost
to
participate
in a
Family
to
Family
class,
you
don’t
need to
be a
NAMI
member,
and it
doesn’t
matter
if you
live in
a
particular
chapter’s
area to
attend a
class.
Just
pick out
a date
and
location
that’s
convenient.
Please
note,
however,
that
registration
is
necessary
as class
size is
limited.

Legislative
Alert:
Impeachment
and
other
items |
 |
|
By Hugh
Brady
Governor
Blagojevich
has been
notoriously
stingy
when it
comes to
state
resources
for
mental
health.
We
certainly
hope
that a
new
governor
will
realize
that the
state
must
adequately
support
its
mental
health
system,
that it
must pay
its
bills on
time and
that
Medicaid
payments
from the
US
government
must be
allocated
to the
programs
to which
they are
due.
While
the
Illinois
State
Legislature
is quite
rightly
focusing
on the
impeachment
process,
there
are a
couple
of major
mental
health
related
questions
being
considered
by the
US
Congress:
low
income
housing
and
children’s
health
insurance.
There
are a
couple
of very
interesting
websites
which
will
help
make
your
opinions,
including
change.gov,
set up
by the
incoming
Obama
administration.

From the
President's
Desk:
Mental
Health
Allies |
 |
|
By Hugh
Brady
We are
not
alone.
NAMI and
those
who
support
improved
services
for
people
with
mental
illness
have
allies,
including
the
Illinois
League
of Women
Voters,
the
Illinois
Education
Association,
and
others.
We’d
like to
thank
these
groups
and also
ask if
you can
suggest
groups
we can
work
with.

Research
Report:
Ministers
& Mental
Illness |
 |
|
When
mental
illness
strikes
many
people
first
turn to
their
minister
for
advice
and
counsel.
Most
ministers
do a
great
job at
providing
support
and
referring
people
to
community
agencies
and
mental
health
professionals
for
help.
But a
new
research
study
conducted
at
Baylor
University
found
that
about
one-third
of the
time
people,
“who
approached
their
local
church
for
assistance
in
response
to a
personal
or
family
member's
diagnosed
mental
illness.
. . .
were
told by
their
church
pastor
that
they or
their
loved
one did
not
really
have a
mental
illness.
The
study
found
these
church
members
were
told the
cause of
their
problem
was
solely
spiritual
in
nature,
such as
a
personal
sin,
lack of
faith or
demonic
involvement.”
Ouch -
understanding
these
illnesses
is still
very
difficult
for many
people.
It would
be great
to get
more
pastors
into our
Family
to
Family
classes.

sponsor
a mental

and
lobbying
day in
Springfield.
This
year’s
rally
will be
on May

will be
a great
opportunity
to meet
your
legislators
and urge
them to
fix
Illinois
broken
mental
health
system.
The
Mental
Health
Summit
and
other
organizations
will
provide
coach
busses
to take
folks to
Springfield
for the
event.
We will
leave in
the
morning
and
return
in the
early
evening.
If you
can
possibly
arrange
