NAMIBA annual meeting a great success
NAMI Barrington Area held our annual meeting November 29.

The meeting room at the public library was filled with energy and enthusiasm as we heard an overview of the chapter’s successes and plans and then listened to three fascinating guest speakers:   Sue Shimon of Wilpower, Inc., Jay Forman from Thresholds and Joe Novak, the Director or Northwest Community Hospital’s Mental Health Network.

NAMIBA welcomes new board members
At our October and November Board meetings, NAMI Barrington Area's Board of Directors appointed Elba Stewart and Carol Ziolo to fill the unexpired terms of two other directors who had resigned earlier this year. Elba has been helping Mary Holcomb and Maryrose Peters as a teaching assistant with several sections of Family to Family and will serve as our Webmaster. Carol is the Clinical Educator at Northwest Community Hospitals mental Health Network. She will also be the teaching assistant helping Maryrose with our upcoming Family-to-Family Class and will be writing a monthly column for our newsletter. We are very pleased to have Elba and Carol on the Board and know they help our chapter grow and improve.

From Carol's Corner
by Carol Ziolo

Please allow me to introduce myself as a new member of NAMI-Barrington Area, the Clinical Educator for Northwest Community Hospital's Mental Health Network and a family member.  Hugh Brady asked if I would follow Dr. Grace and write this column.

My topic this month is stress – a crucial issue if you or someone you love has a mental illness, and an especially relevant topic during the holidays. I have 12 tips to share from the Mayo Clinic's website – I think you'll find them very helpful.

President's message
Advocacy, as those of you who have taken the Family to Family class know, is a crucial last step in any recovery process. So often it's only when people can find the strength to help others that they can take control of their own problems.

Advocacy is particularly needed in Illinois, a state with one of the worst records on mental health programs in the country. Though our legislators have a terrible record, most just don’t know a whole lot about mental illness and they’ll try to do the right thing, once they know what needs to be done.  It’s up to us to educate them.

Understanding Social Security: Disability Coverage
We will run our third installment in our Social Security series this month: Disability Coverage, by Patrick Rodgers of the Social Security Administration.

Whether you're trying to establish a disability for a loved one or just wondering about your retirement benefits, we hope this explanation of how work and disability fit within SSA benefits will help you.

This month, Part Three: Disability Coverage

(Or read Part One or Part 2)

Legislative alert
Congress has been working to pass a mental health parity bill, but they haven't quite gotten it done.   The bill, which would require employer provided insurance policies which provide mental health benefits to do so on the same basis as other health benefits, passed the Senate unanimously last month and is now awaiting action by the House of Representative. So NAMI is urging everyone to contact their US Senators and Representatives to urge them to pass this bill.

In Illinois, a bill to create the Illinois Affordable Housing Capital Fund awaits the govenor's signature, and he needs some urging to sign the bill.

Local schizophrenia study making a difference - needs participants
Researchers in Evanston have identified a key gene involved in schizophrenia- a crucial first step that may lead to new treatments.

But the Evanston Northwestern Healthcare Research Institute, Center for Psychiatric Genetics needs to keep working. They're looking for people who suffer from schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder willing to participate in further study.

The research consists of interviews, review of hospitalization records and a blood draw from each participant. The interview lasts approximately two hours and covers his or her psychiatric and family history. There is also a parent or caretaker interview that lasts approximately 30 minutes and covers the person’s psychiatric history. The participant will receive $50 for completion of the diagnostic interview and $25 for the blood draw. The interviews and blood draw can be done at a laboratory or in the family's home. Confidentiality is protected.

U.S. Government promotes benefits website
We recently had an email passed on to us from - of all people - the U.S. Department of Labor trying to get the word out about GovBenefits.gov, the official benefits web site of the U.S. Government.

The site is pretty cool. The idea is to help people needing help hook up with federal and state assistance. It's so cool that we've decided to add a link to it and other helpful websites as a perminent part of this newsletter. (We'd love to hear of others you use.)

Shop Amazon for the holidays and support NAMI
Amazon.com will donate an average of 5 - 8% of your purchases this holiday season to NAMI National - if you buy through the NAMI Amazon store or NAMI Amazon portal.

It's pretty simple. You just have to enter Amazon through the link from the NAMI National website. If you follow the link below, their computer will know that you're a NAMI shopper and will credit NAMI for what you buy (in most categories). Beyond using the portal, you don't have to do anything special and you'll pay no more. What could be simpler?

Volunteers needed
by Don Kreski

We've completed more than a full year as a NAMI chapter and are beginning to reach our stride. It's been a wonderful experience for me personally to be involved. I can't tell you how much I've learned and how helpful it's been in my own dealings with family members with mental health issues.

I want to invite you to help us support and advocate for people with brain disorders, and in so doing, help yourself. Are you willing to lend a hand?

There's so much we can accomplish, but only with more good people like you pitching in. We have some specific needs in mind, but if there's something you feel you can accomplish, we'd love to hear what it is. Please call.

If you can help, call Maryrose at 847-382-6623.

Please pass on this newsletter
We hope you'll pass this newsletter on to friends, family members or professionals who might get some useful information from it. Even though you don't know if your friend would need this valuable information and support, you never know who may have a co-worker or neighbor who would.

The best way to pass it on is to hit the 'forward email'   button at the bottom. You can write a note when you forward it, and you may also ask your friend to pass it on to others for the same reason. You may mention that if he or she enjoys it, to be sure to hit the 'join our mailing list' button in the right-hand column.

There's no need to worry if your friend lives in the area, as NAMI has chapters throughout the United States. It's a free newsletter. You don't have to be a member to receive it. No one will call, email or otherwise bother new subscribers.

Join NAMI
We hope you'll join NAMI and support our advocacy for the mentally ill. The cost is only $35 (adult and spouse) or $10 (for consumer). If this cost will create a financial hardship, we have a limited number of open door memberships available at a reduced fee.

If you don't wish to join right now, but you'd like to receive our free newsletter, simply use the "Join our mailing list" button in the gray column to the right, call or send us an email (see below).
