    From the President's Desk - March 2010

By Hugh Brady

Off to a Great Start

NAMI BA is off to a great start in 2010. We have two Family to Family classes up and
running and both are filled way beyond NAMI national’s recommended maximum class
size of 25.

In early February several NAMI BA members attended NAMI Illinois’ facilitator and
teacher training in Peoria. So we now have more trained support group leaders and
Family-to-Family teachers. This will enable us to expand our offerings to meet the
growing need and also to ease the burden on our overworked roster of teachers and
facilitators.

This training has allowed us to meet a goal we have been long working on. On
Thursday, March 4th we will begin a new weekly NAMI Connections support group.
NAMI Connections is an award winning support group for consumers run by consumers.
NAMI Connections will meet every Thursday at Northwest Community Hospital in
Arlington Heights (second floor, Mental Health Network, building #7) from 7:00 to 9:00
PM (For more information call Nora at (847) 899-NAMI (6264).)

This weekly Connections support group will be paired with a family support group, same
time, same building but a different room. The pairing will enable families to attend a
support group on the same night.

We had a great movie night in January, where we showed "When Medicine Got in
Wrong", and we are having another one on March 8th where we will be showing "Minds on the Edge". More than 40 people attended the showing of "When Medicine Got It Wrong" and we are anticipating a nice crowd for Minds on the Edge as well.

In addition, in January we began our quarterly regular-mail newsletter for NAMI BA
members. It was jam packed with informative articles about mental illness and mental
health events. The second issue should be out at the end of March.

None of this would have been possible without the help and hard work of the many F2F
teachers, facilitators, writers, phone callers and schedulers, board members and
volunteers. NAMI is making a real difference in the lives of people with mental illness
and their families. Thank you to everyone who has made this possible.
